The World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) are organizing a technical workshop on safer school facilities on March 19 and 20, 2015, in Tokyo, Japan.

This technical workshop brings together representatives from infrastructure units within Ministries of Education and Public Works and World Bank project managers to discuss how to move the safer schools agenda forward at country level. The workshop will focus on various dimensions of a long-term strategy: developing a school infrastructure baseline, identifying drivers of school construction, establishing a disaster risk baseline, and building the foundation of a safer school investment operation. It will seek to share experiences and identify challenges, lessons learned in order to contribute to a better understanding how to develop national strategies designed to reach scale.

To date, the following countries have confirmed their participation: Armenia, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Turkey, Peru, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, and Mozambique.
